Women’s History Heroes #3 – Daisy May Bates
Posted by Matt Langdon on March 3, 2008
Daisy May Bates spent more than 35 years learning about the Australian Aborigines by living with them in a tent, fully dressed in her English clothes. She learned their stories, their languages, and their customs.
Most importantly for the people she was studying, she cared. When she saw the struggles her subjects endured she used her own money to provide for them. That included medicine, food, and clothing. It also included protection from exploitation in the form of a pair of pistols she carried at her side.
