Dave Eggers Has A Vision
2008 May 30
When I asked why you regular readers visit the blog a common answer was to be inspired. Prepare to be inspired.
Christian Long called me tonight to talk about the hero’s journey in high school English and mentioned Dave Eggers’ speech at TED. It was on Christian’s blog that I saw the cyberbullying video. Dave Eggers is a hero.
Watch this video from TED. It’s 25 minutes, but don’t let that stop you. You’ll be thinking about it for hours afterwards. I have been. Then read the stuff at Once Upon A School and 826 National. Who wants to start a tutoring centre with me?

So I am going to respond in point form, b/c there is so much….
1. Certainly inspirational, please please anyone who hasn’t watched the whole video do so…
2. The creativity was impressive, who wouldn’t want to owna priate supply store, or a super hero supply store etc etc and help kids with their education
3. Really liked his idea (although tongue in cheek a little) about homework saving communities, BRILLIANT!
4. Couldn’t believe he had 1400 tutors just at his store – AMAZING
5. There is something similar in Ann Arbor that my friend David goes to , I will find out more information…
6. When can we start?!
Thanks for the kind link above. Glad you saw the magic in Eggers’ words/inspiration.
One of the great regrets I have had was to turn down my TED membership/ticket this past year when I switched careers and no longer afford the yearly membership. But then I watch stuff like this and realize that the ideas matter more than the meet-n-greet in person.
Fired up to begin collaborating with you re: the ‘hero journey’, my friend. My 10th graders will certainly be well served, as will I!
Travel safely to NJ to start camp. Envious. More than you can imagine. Perhaps you’ll help pull me back into the “10 (months) for 2 (months)” mindset of summer camping in the years to come.
Look forward to brainstorming when you get time this summer…after I do a bit more research, of course.
I’m very inspired. I’m looking at the options in Flint.
I look forward to talking to you over the summer. New Jersey has been humid so far and I’m excited for the kids to get here.
