Wanted: Hero Charities
Last year I decided to donate money from The Hero Workshop to charity at the end of every year. Last year it was to Greg Mortensen’s work in building schools in Pakistan and Afghanistan. This year, I have a couple of ideas, but would like to hear from you.
I’m looking for a charity that is small enough that I’m sure my money is going to be used for good – not to pad the pockets of an Executive Director. I also want a charity that is run by a hero – someone front and centre who has chosen to act to make the world a better place. I asked out on Twitter a couple of days ago and got a couple of suggestions. I’ll ask again soon. If you know of a charity that fits the bill, let me know in the comments.
Rainbow Trust is a British group helping families of children with life threatening or terminal illnesses. They were founded by a hero: Bernadette Cleary.
Roy Maas’ Youth Alternatives is in San Antonio providing care for children in crisis. They were started by Roy Maas.
Sunlight Solar Flashlights offer a Buy One, Give One program. You buy one for yourself and they give one to someone who needs it in the Third World. These things are amazing – a piece of design brilliance. Read the benefits of these things by clicking here.
So let me know where you think the Hero Workshop’s money should go.

Matt, I just found out about this charity and thought I should tell you about it. It is the Intrepid fund for our troops. Like the Intrepid museum in NY, this charity is from the same organization. The creators of this charity are trying to raise money so they can build an amazing facility to treat our wounded troops coming back from Iraq as well as Afghanistan who suffer from Traumatic Brain Injuries. The website for the organization is http://www.fallenheroesfund.org/Home.aspx I learned about the organization by watching the UFC on Spike. Both organizations as well as some Mixed Martial Arts suppliers hosted an event last night to help the Intrepid fund. A website the UFC, Spike, and the Intrepid fund put together with an auction is http://www.fightforthetroops.com
Like they kept saying all night, “These troops fought for us, now its time we fight for them”.
Thanks a lot for the suggestion Steve. It’s great that you’re spreading word of these kinds of things.
The Emma Academy Project is the charity I’m supporting this year though. I hope others will see your charity and investigate further.
The Rescue and Sanctuary for Threatened Animals (RASTA). http://www.allanimalssanctuary.com/
Lucie, the young woman who runs it is remarkable. She has over 200 animals (with a maximum of 5 dogs due to bylaw restrictions) and works endlessly to care for the animals and raise funds to keep it going. The animals are lovingly cared for, not just sheltered. We’ve adopted two of our dogs from RASTA and they’ve been the best dogs for our family as they were rehabilitated (when necessary) and recommended because they matched to our needs. Every time we visit the farm we’re even more amazed. RASTA is one of our family’s charities of choice.
From RASTA’s website:
Non-discriminatory Rescue Open to All Animals Regardless of Breed, Size, Age or Species
