Where Have I Been?
It’s been two weeks since I posted, so I’m sure many of you are worried about me… I started this post a week ago and titled it “March Roundup”. Considering it’s two weeks into April, that didn’t really apply any more. So, what follows is a list of highlights from the past six weeks or so. If you’re interested in hearing more about a particular subject, let me know in the comments and I’ll expand the list item to a blog post.
The Heroic Imagination Project kicked off at Stanford University on March 13-15. Phil Zimbardo’s project attracted many people from across the globe. There were about twenty of us, including Zeno Franco and me. This will definitely turn into a blog post this week, so I’ll stop there.
I attended the first Ninja Training for the Lifeplan Institute at Disneyland Hotel in Anaheim earlier in March. The program I was trained in creates a plan for teenagers to help them avoid the four causes of life derailment for youth: failing school, drugs, gangs, and pregnancy. If you’re interested, check out lifeplaninstitute.org. I can provide the program or train you to do it.
A number of schools experienced the Hero Workshop, including an unprecedented set of excursions out of Michigan. Josh and Todd helped out in that area as I was unavailable. Together, we went to Massachussetts, New York, and Wisconsin. That was in addition to a number of dates in Michigan. I’ll be posting some photos later this week.
I met up with Zeno Franco in Milwaukee where we discussed (and planned) a research project through the University of Wisconsin. We’ll be looking at the effects of a hero-based curriculum on students in Milwaukee and Michigan.
The Hero Workshop blog was included in, “100 Best Blogs for Those Who Want to Change the World” (http://www.bestuniversities.com/blog/2009/100-best-blogs-for-those-who-want-to-change-the-world/).
So, I am back and will be posting more regularly. If you’re on Twitter, make sure you follow me as I tend to post a lot of stories I see in the media there.

Matt —
In reading this post, it is not only exciting — it occurs to me that you are walking your talk as you are clearly on your very own hero’s journey! Congratulations!
Whitney
Thanks Whitney. I am indeed on a journey. It’s not what I planned, but is already better. Who was it that said “life is what happens while you’re planning”? That’s been my adult life and I’m glad for it. Thanks for all your support over the last couple if years.
Hi Matt,
I think you’re referring to a quote by John Lennon….

“Life is what happens to you while you’re busy making other plans”
Thanks Elizabeth – exactly the one. I would never have guessed it was John Lennon though.
You know we missed you, but sounds like you have been doing amazing things. Kudos to you.
Also, the Ninja training sounds like something my wife and I need to look into for Madison.
Thanks Christopher. Let me know if you want to know more about Lifeplan after looking at the site.
